OBJECTION TO PROPOSED ELECTRICITY TARIFF INCREASE (2026/2027) - MBEKWENI, PAARL

To: Drakenstein Municipality 

We, the undersigned residents of Mbekweni, hereby strongly object to the proposed electricity tariff increases for the 2026/2027 financial year.

Our community is already facing severe financial hardship due to high unemployment, low household incomes, and the rising cost of living. The current electricity tariffs are already killing us and unaffordable for many families. This proposed increase will only worsen our situation and place burden on our families and community. 

We are concerned that:

- Many households are struggling to afford electricity as now.

- Pensioners and vulnerable residents are the most effected.

- Families are forced to choose between electricity and basic needs such as food.

- Small businesses are suffering due to high electricity costs.

Electricity is a basic necessity, not a luxury. Increasing tariffs at this time will deepen poverty and negatively impact the well-being, safety, and dignity of our community. 

We therefore demand:

1. The immediate withdrawal of the proposed tariff increase. 

2. Proper public engagement, including a community meeting in Mbekweni.

3. Consideration of relief measures or subsidized tariffs for low income households.

We call on the Municipality to act in the best interest of its residents and take our concerns seriously.
